Programs

YouthWorks is Gaston County's Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program for youth. YouthWorks is a year-round employment and training program for in school, out-of-school, and at-risk youth ages 14 - 21. The program provides both academic and career related experiences designed to expose youth to the world of work, and to help them acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain a job and advance in employment.

In addition to the job-training portion of the program, participants will have basic education and mediation while developing their employability skills with opportunities to develop citizenship and interpersonal skills.

2007 Summer YouthWorks Program

The students work half day and attend school (morning or afternoon) each week Monday through Thursday with Fridays being their fun day (ie. play softball, spend a day at Carowinds).

Classroom schooling plays a large part in the summer program. Certified staff members use the latest training techniques to teach the youth basic life skills such as, learning how to prepare and manage a household. The teachers see the light bulbs go off in the youth's eyes upon forecasting and managing monthly finances in their case study.

2007 Summer YouthWorks Friday Fun

The students work half day and attend school (morning or afternoon) each week Monday through Thursday with Fridays being their fun day (ie. play softball, spend a day at Carowinds).

Fridays are leisure activity days designed to reward the youth for their week's school and work efforts.

Community Outreach

On May 16 2007 as a part of our community outreach iniative Gaston Youthworks sponsored a Mock Interview session at South Point High School. Participants from the Career Manager class were interviewed by Employers in the area and this was tremendously successful.

Check back for more community outreach events!
